Bought sight unseen by a California doctor in 1972, the site of El Pescador enjoys some covetable sandy shores on Ambergris Caye, off the coast of Belize. Located just a few miles north of the isle’s busy tourist town of San Pedro, the resort is made up of a two-story mahogany colonial lodge and three-bedroom, three-bath luxury villas. The attention to detail is a far cry from Belize’s typically uninspired hotels: hardwood floors, handcrafted furniture, bamboo accents, and local art on the walls.

Blue Hole

About the same size as Wales, Belize rests on the Caribbean coast between Mexico and Guatemala: an exotic, English-speaking, adventurer’s paradise, just a couple of hours away from three major United States cities. Almost half the country has been preserved as nature parks and reserves, including tropical forests teeming with wildlife and hiding mysterious Mayan ruins, and 174 miles (280km) of coastline featuring the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere.

The reef and the country’s numerous offshore cayes, or atolls, have made this one of the world’s most desirable destinations for scuba divers and marine researchers. They come to explore unique features like the famous ‘Blue Hole’, a collapsed submerged cave 1,000 feet (305m) in diameter and 412 feet (126m) deep.

Archaeologically Belize is fascinating too, having been the site of mighty Mayan cities from around 1,000 BC until the inexplicable disintegration of that great civilisation around 900 AD. There are believed to be thousands of Mayan ruins in Belize, of which about 600 have been discovered and excavated, many now open to tourists.

Like most Caribbean countries Belize was occupied by British and Spanish colonialists over the centuries before gaining independence (only lately recognised by neighbouring Guatemala which laid claim to the territory) in 1981. Today it is a happy-go-lucky multi-ethnic nation of warm, friendly people, very welcoming of the tourists on whom the country’s economy relies heavily.

The main urban city (although not the capital) is Belize City, which offers some attractions like a world-class zoo, a new museum, historic buildings and the Maya site of Altun Ha. Basically, though, Belize is a destination for the outdoor enthusiast and adventure traveller. There are not many nightclubs, expensive shopping venues or fancy restaurants, but there is plenty of scope for diving, snorkelling, fishing, hiking, birdwatching, kayaking and exploring.

Who would have thought that when we first began our sea kayak and snorkel trips at little-known Glover’s Reef Atoll that a decade later it would become both a treasured National Park and be recognized as a United Nations World Heritage Site. In 2003, we opened our newest basecamp on Halfmoon Caye, Lighthouse Reef. With its rare beauty and astonishing marine life it will surely become one known as a world-class sea kayak and snorkel destination.

Our exploratory river and jungle trips in Belize continue to define the cutting edge and are unequalled for wildlife, whitewater and spectacular scenery. These adventures not only bring you to the most beautiful and pristine locations in the country, but we also take you there at the right times, with the top guides in the country and with the quality gear you need to explore to the fullest.
An adventurer’s paradise, Belize is a peaceful, English-speaking country just two hours away from 3 major U.S. Gateways. With a diversity of adventure opportunities unmatched by any other country, the Belizean people have protected over 40% of the country as parks and natural reserves.

Belize is on the Caribbean coast, nestled between Mexico and Guatemala and offers an intriguing mix of tropical forests rich with wildlife, majestic mountains, mysterious Maya temples, and diving and fishing experiences beyond comparison. In a single day, one can go from tropical forest to the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere.
And the people are as warm and friendly as the climate. BELIZE@FriendsTravel.com

For the outdoor enthusiast, Belize presents unlimited opportunities. You might say that Belize is the outdoors. You will find diving, snorkeling, fishing, hiking, and exploring nature at its best.

THINGS TO DO

Pack your bags, but keep it light! While Belize offers more than enough to keep you on the move (even if it to just roll over on the beach) you will never have to move far thanks to its diverse and convenient geography. The following is just a small sample of what awaits you in your travels of Belize.

Sun, sea, and sand—need we say more?

Hike or canoe under the shade of the rainforest canopy in the company of over 500 species of birds.

Observe stalactites and stalagmites in caves that contain pottery and ceremonial remnants of the ancient Maya.

Island hop by kayak between the cayes or around one of Belize’s three atolls,

Witness a sunset from atop a Mayan temple

Snorkel with the kids and learn about the biology of the barrier reef.

Take a refreshing dip beneath one of the many waterfalls.

Exchange vows with the Caribbean Sea lapping at your feet,

Swap stories back at the resort after a day of wrestling with permit, tarpon and bonefish.

In Belize, opportunities for adventure abound.
